When you take a photo with an iPhone, the default setting captures what Apple calls a Live Photo which can be converted into a short video or even a GIF for easy sharing anywhere. It's easy to see movement in a Live Photo with the iPhone because a bit of movement appears when you switch between images in the Photos app. However, sharing this experience with someone in line may require an additional step.

Apple has a few special features built into the camera app that aren't always obvious. Touch the words at the bottom of the screen. Swiping up reveals camera controls to adjust brightness, set a photo timer, or access Live Photo settings. The default for Live Photos is Auto, but in activating this option, each photo will be saved for 1.5 seconds before and 1.5 seconds after pressing the shutter.

An iPhone Live Photo sometimes captures a moment in a much more interesting way than a snapshot. Sharing that "moving image" may be easier if it's turned into an animated GIF or a video and it is possible to do this with apps on iPhone. Apple makes it easy to save a live photo as a video. User just needs to open the photo and then to tap on the Share menu in the lower left corner and select 'Save as Video.' Saving a Live Photo in GIF format requires some setup, but afterwards the option can be found in the same Share menu.

The ‘Create a GIF’ shortcut for iPhone

While the iPhone comes with a Share menu option to save a Live Photo as a video, saving as a GIF requires using the Shortcuts app. of a sequence in six steps, so it can be entered manually, but there is a predefined shortcut available in the shortcut gallery, which makes it easy to add this feature to the Photos app. To install it, the user must open the Shortcuts app, tap the gallery tab at the bottom right, then search for 'Make a GIF' and add it. After adding the 'Make a GIF', it can be run from the Shortcuts app.

A more convenient method is to make it appear in the Share menu by tapping on the 'My Shortcuts', then the ellipsis symbol (…) next to the 'Make a GIF' Shortcut, which will show the shortcut code and will provide options. Tap the options button in the top right to see the toggle to 'Show in Share Sheet.' video by tapping share and then choosing either option from the iPhone's Share sheet in the Photos app.
