Apple's video call service, FaceTime, has recently made it possible to share your screen with the other participant. Here's how.

When Apple first launched FaceTime, many companies copied the service. Indeed, the concept of FaceTime at the time was surprisingly simple: it was nothing more or less than a video calling tool. Many other devices and third-party apps already supported the tool, but for some reason it took Apple a while to not only bring front-facing cameras to the iPhone, but also video calling. .

Today, however, FaceTime has become the default video calling app, not just for iPhones, but also for iPads and Mac computers, allowing users across Apple's ecosystem to quickly switch video calls to whoever they want.

With the launch of iOS 15, Apple introduced a new feature, screen sharing. Users in a FaceTime call can now share their screen with the other(s). It's especially useful for collaborating on a work or school project, or just want to show someone something on your smartphone.

Share Screen in FaceTime

To share the screen during a FaceTime call, you need at least iOS 15.1.

According to Apple, the devices eligible for iOS 15 are: iPhone 6s or newer, iPhone SE first and second generation, iPod touch (7th generation), iPad Air (2nd, 3rd, 4th generation), iPad mini (4th, 5th , 6th generation), iPad (6th to 9th generation) and all iPad Pro.

If you have a compatible device and have updated to the latest version of iOS:

  1. Launch FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad, tap New FaceTime.
  2. Select the contact you want to call and tap the button to FaceTime to start the call.
  3. Once the call is connected, tap the SharePlay button in the control panel at the top right of the screen.
  4. Tap on Share my screen and after 3 seconds your screen will be shared.

During a screen share, you can launch other applications and do whatever you want while the call is active. The other person will see everything you do. So make sure you don't open sensitive documents that you don't want the other to see.

You will also see a purple SharePlay icon in the top left of the iPhone or iPad screen indicating that FaceTime screen sharing is active. You can tap on it to bring up the FaceTime control panel and tap on the SharePlay icon again to end screen sharing or you can just end the call which will end the screen sharing with same occasion.
