The Epson EcoTank ET-2760 ($299.99) sits roughly in the middle of the company's recently released bulk-ink all-in-one printer lineup, below the ET-3760 and the ET-4760, Editor's Choice. Like those two high-end printers, the ET-2760 prints and copies well, and it's very inexpensive to use. However, it's a little slower than its more robust siblings and lacks some essential productivity features, including an automatic document feeder (ADF) and Ethernet connectivity. If, however, your family, home office, or micro office doesn't need multi-page scanning and copying, or the speed and features of its higher-end sibling, the tiny ET-2760 sells for much less.

Small and powerful

At 9.4 x 14.8 x 13.7 inches (HWD) and weighing just over 13 pounds, the ET-2760 is significantly smaller than its ET-4760 and ET siblings. -3760 mentioned above. It also takes up significantly less desk space than several competing models, including the Canon Pixma G6020, HP's OfficeJet Pro Premier and Brother's MFC-J805DW. As with price, however, what you gain in a smaller footprint you sacrifice in functionality.

As we mentioned, the ET-2760 does not have an automatic document feeder, which means that to scan and copy multi-page documents, you have to place each page on the scanner platen manually, the scan, remove it, then repeat the process for each subsequent page. All of the competing models mentioned here have an ADF, except Canon's G6020. If you want to scan and copy multi-page documents, these models are better choices.

Startup functions, such as making copies, scanning to or printing from the cloud, or printing from memory cards, are managed from a control panel consisting of a set of navigation keys and a few other buttons (Home, Back, Copy and Cancel) anchored by a 1.4-inch color non-touchscreen, shown here.

The four ink tank levels, which allow you to gauge the amount of ink available, are also visible on the front of the device.

As for paper handling, the ET-2760 has a 100-sheet input tray that loads from the back of the device, and the output tray can only hold 30 prints. The input tray can also hold up to 20 sheets of premium photo paper or 10 #10 envelopes. Borderless photos up to 4 x 6 inches are supported, and the maximum monthly duty cycle is 1,500 prints, with the recommended print volume being 10% of this figure. This print volume is the lowest of all the devices mentioned here.

Connectivity, mobile solutions and software

Compared to its high-end siblings, the ET-2760's connectivity isn't as robust. You get Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, single PC connection via USB 2.0 and Wi-Fi Direct. The latter is a peer-to-peer protocol allowing mobile devices to be connected to the printer without being connected to a local area network (LAN) or a router.

Mobile connectivity includes Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Fire OS Support and Mopria Print Service, plus Epson iPrint for iOS and Android. iPrint is an application for printing directly from mobile devices. You can also print from various types of SD cards through a port on the left side of the chassis, as shown here in red.

Poor print speeds

Epson rates the ET-2760 at 10.5 monochrome pages per minute (ppm) and 5 ppm for color pages, which is acceptable for an entry-level AIO, but by no means fast. I tested it over a USB connection from our standard Intel Core i5 test PC running Windows 10 Professional. It produced our 12-page Microsoft Word text document at 8.9ppm, about 1.6ppm less than Epson's estimate.

See how we test printers

That's about half as fast as its ET-4760 and ET-3760 siblings and 0.2ppm slower than Brother's MFC-J805DW. In contrast, the much more robust HP Premier is over 9ppm faster.

I continued testing by printing our collection of complex color Adobe Acrobat documents, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, charts and graphs, and PowerPoint documents containing various business graphics and colored typefaces of various sizes. I then combined those results with those from printing the text document from the previous test and got a somewhat sluggish score of 5ppm for printing all of our business documents. This score is just over 2ppm over the ET-4760 and ET-3760, faster than the MFC-J805DW by a measly 0.2ppm, and almost 7ppm over the Premier.

I also tested the ET-2760's photo printing prowess by timing it while it produced two of our 4 x 6 inch test snapshots and then averaging the results. In this case, the ET-2760 averaged 30 seconds per shot, matching its more robust siblings, beating the MFC-J805DW by more than half and trailing the Premier by 32 seconds.

Reliable Epson print quality

Slow print speeds are always more acceptable when the print quality is good, and it's been a while since I've seen mediocre results from an Epson AIO. The ET-2760 produces excellent text quality with well-formed characters, attractive individual character spacing and pairwise kerning. On my test pages, text was very readable up to about 6 point, which should be acceptable for most home office and family print jobs.

Business graphics are also well delineated, with solid fills without banding or streaks and gradients with smooth color-to-color or tint-to-tint gradations. I only saw very slight streaks on one of our more difficult-to-produce PowerPoint documents, containing a dark green gradient that many of the printers we tested struggled to process.

Photos are also of good quality, with vivid, accurate colors and vibrant detail.

Affordable long-term printing

Apart from Canon's MegaTank brand multifunction printers, Epson's EcoTank models offer the lowest running costs in the printer industry. With the ET-2760, you have enough ink to print up to 7,500 black or 6,000 color pages. When it comes time to purchase replacement bottles, each of the four colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) cost less than $20 each, and the actual cost per page is less than 1 cent (0.3 cents in monochrome and 0.9 cents in color).

Canon's AIO MegaTank printers, including the recently reviewed Pixma G6020, have similar running costs, while Brother's INKvestment Tank models, including the MFC-J805DW discussed here, cost less than 1 cent for pages. black and just under 5 cents for color pages.

HP's Premier printer comes with a one-year free subscription to that company's Instant Ink program, at $10 per month. The advantage of Instant Ink is that once the subscription is over and you pay the monthly subscription fee, that 3.5 cents is the cost of any page, whether it's a page of text with 20% coverage or a borderless letter-size photo with 100% coverage.

Characteristics of operating costs

If your small office doesn't require a lot of multi-page copies, the ET-2760 without ADF may be suitable. But if you need an automatic document feeder, it's better to spend a little more on the ET-3760, or even the more robust ET-4760, which was chosen by the editors. Otherwise, this ET-2760 prints well, if a little slow, and it produces good quality documents. You can print photos directly from your camera's SD card, and running costs are virtually zero. The EcoTank ET-2760 is ideal for the family that prints between 100 and 150 pages and photos per month.
