Recording your screen on Mac is very simple. Here's what you need to know to do this, whether you have a machine running macOS Mojave or newer, or an older device.
Taking a screenshot on Mac is very easy, but about recording video of your screen? What if you need to record your screen to certify this or that operation? Or maybe you want to make tutorial videos for YouTube on how to use software, a how-to guide for a game or something else. There are many projects that may require screen recording.
Keep in mind that there are two methods, listed below. One concerns Mac machines running macOS Mojave or newer, and the other for those who have a Mac that is not entitled to Mojave - therefore running under a version prior to Mojave -. So make sure you choose the right method according to your machine.
Record screen on macOS Mojave or newer
- Press Cmd + Shift + 5 to bring up the Snipping Tool.
- The fourth and fifth button from the left is for video recording.
- If you want to record your entire screen, click the fourth button.
- Click the fifth if you want to only capture only a portion of the screen.
- Click Options if you want additional tools like activating the microphone.
- When you're done, click the Stop button while top of the screen.
Be aware that by recording your entire screen, the menu bar, status bar and everything else will be recorded. If you have things you'd rather not show, choose to record only a portion of the screen instead.
Record screen with QuickTime on older Macs
The screen recording feature of macOS Mojave is, in truth, nothing new. It comes from QuickTime Player, which was the dedicated method to do this on older versions of the OS. The functionality hasn't changed much, but if you have a machine running an older version of macOS, you'll need to use QuicTime Player.
- Launch QuickTime Player.
- Click File and select “New Screen Recording”.
- To start recording, click the “Record” button.
- To see more options, click the down arrow button next to the Save button.
- Once you click the Save button, click n anywhere on the screen to start recording the whole screen or drag the slider to select the portion of the screen to record.
- Click the Stop button in the menu bar when you you're done.
