What you need to know to start with is that the very name “iPhone 14” is not sure. Apple could indeed very well choose to call its future flagship iPhone 13s or iPhone 13S, a nomenclature that certain ranges such as the iPhone X and iPhone 6 have already tasted in the past.

Depending on the screen sizes that we will see below, we tend to rely on the following brands:

Software: iOS 16?

If Apple does not deviate from its habits, the iPhone 14 will be powered by iOS 16. No information on this version has circulated until now, but we knows that the developer is mainly focused on rolling out privacy-related features in recent months.

Note that the arrival of a virtual reality headset and AR glasses are also in the pipeline; new options at 360 degrees or in superposition with the user's environment could therefore be included.

Connectivity and charging of the iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 could be equipped with a Wi-Fi 6E modem. Already present on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, this component announced by Ming-Chi Kuo (75.9% of assumptions verified according to AppleTrack) will then bring several advantages to the 2022 iPhone such as faster file transfers.

On the socket side, the Lightning proprietary plug would still be there. Europe is trying to put an end to what it considers an ecological aberration in favor of the universal USB-C standard, but Apple would not abandon its home alternative yet despite its zero emissions target for 2030. It However, it is rumored that an iPhone will soon be devoid of any charging port, in favor of wireless only. But it will therefore probably not be the iPhone 14, the rumors are rather betting on its successors now.

According to a hypothesis supported by orders for spare parts from LG Innotek instead of its competitor Samsung, Apple is preparing so-called “periscope” lenses. In short, this is a foldable zoom technology that allows large sensors to be integrated into small formats. This is how the iPhone 14 Pro would then have a 10x zoom, an ideal follow-up to the telephoto lens already present on the iPhone 13 and even recommended by ophthalmologist Tommy Korn.

Penalized performance

All rumors about the iPhone 14 processor logically point to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) as the supplier. This takes care of ARM Apple silicon chips (iPad, iPhone, Mac) and nothing should change for the occasion. Its supply chain would however be hampered by various factors including a shortage of equipment, the coronavirus pandemic or the geopolitical context on the island of Taipei according to The Information (AppleTrack score: 90.9%).

Rather than improving - as every year - by reducing its fineness of engraving, planned to go from five to three nanometers according to the local source DigiTimes (58.3%) or four for Nikkei Asia, the founder would then risk being stuck at the same stage by the time the 2022 iPhone is ready.

The iPhone 14 should not be slowed down, however, since the optimizations of iOS have more than enough to compensate if necessary. As for the RAM, this stagnating at 6 GB for the Pro since the iPhone 12 is well below other brands for the same price, it is very easy to assume that its quantity will be increased, but nothing is less certain. The “classic” iPhone 14 can therefore just as well be satisfied with 4 GB as for the iPhone 13.

iPhone 14: the screens

If there is one rumor about the iPhone 14 that everyone seems to agree on, it's that of its different versions and therefore of their respective diagonals. We would thus be entitled to the following quartet (Kuo), with a better size/screen ratio each time:

No iPhone 14 mini, therefore, the fault of too low sales for the current compact editions.

Note that according to another hallway noise published this time by The Elec (75%), the ProMotion technology that refreshes the image broadcast up to 120 times per second would be exclusive to iPhones 14 Pro. As with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, again. The classic 2022 iPhones, for their part, would be satisfied with LTPS OLED panels limited to 60 Hz.

Ming-Chi Kuo also clarifies that Touch ID under the screen will not be available with the iPhone 14, but perhaps for a device of the next generation.

Finally, even if it is likely to see Apple enter the foldable iPhone market before other manufacturers have proven themselves in the field, the question still arises. Indeed, although these smartphones are still too expensive and their long-term future relatively unclear, we are not immune to an upcoming democratization as Cupertino likes to do so well (Watch, AirPods, Face ID, etc.). Corning and Foxconn, two major subcontractors of the company, are already testing prototypes while the latter is multiplying unequivocal patents in this direction. So it's not just a rumor...

What storage for the iPhone in 2022?

iPhone 14 design: the rumours

For @LeaksApplePro on Twitter, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max that could see the light of day in the fall of 2022 will finally abandon their protruding notch at the advantage of a punch camera, as on Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G for example. The notch would however be kept for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max.

To finish with the appearance, Mark Gurman (Bloomberg, 87% accuracy) is betting on a complete overhaul of the format of the iPhone 14 compared to the 2021 versions. The investment bank JPMorgan is even going to further and put on a titanium version!

Price

The price of the 2022 iPhones will unfortunately be on the rise. It has indeed not moved from the iPhone 12 to the iPhone 13, but the delivery delays in Asia seen above or the multiple fines of billions of euros condemning Apple (anti-competitive behavior, security, rights of consumers) do not help.

Currently, the cheapest iPhone is the iPhone 13 mini with a price of 809 euros on the meter. But as the compact format would be at the end, looking at the price of the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 is more judicious: it is set at 909 euros. Add 91 euros… And the symbolic bar of 1,000 euros for your iPhone 14 can be crossed.

We can also imagine a pack with iPhone 14, Apple One plan and VR headset for a higher price. But this will depend on the actual release date of the latter, especially since recent clues about it predict that it will be autonomous, with its own screen…

What about 2023?

Finally, here's a quick recap of other rumors that aren't expected to be confirmed with the 2022 iPhone, but possibly the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16.
