Having trouble with your Wi-Fi? Are you on vacation abroad or in a place without a Wi-Fi connection? Or do you want to help out a loved one by sharing your mobile data? You can easily opt for connection sharing from your smartphone to a computer, a tablet or another phone. A brief summary of the possible options when you want to perform connection sharing from an Android smartphone or an iPhone.
Connection sharing from an Android smartphone
Several configurations are possible to share mobile data from your Android phone.
Sharing your Wi-Fi connection
You can make your Android smartphone a hotspot. To do this, here is the procedure to follow:
Note that you can also manage the access point settings by clicking on Configure the Wi-Fi access point. This allows you to define the name of the access point or the password to access it.
Once tethering is enabled, your phone will appear in the Wi-Fi hotspots of the device you want to share your mobile data with.
Share your connection via Bluetooth
If you want to share your connection via Bluetooth, you will first need to pair your phone with the other device. To do this, in the drop-down menu that appears when you swipe from top to bottom, activate Bluetooth if it is not already done and long click on the icon to access the connection settings in order to associate the two devices. To enable sharing via Bluetooth:
To finalize connection sharing, go to your computer's Settings, Devices and Bluetooth and other devices. Finally, click on Add a Bluetooth device or other device to detect the smartphone.
Share your connection via a USB cable
To share your Android smartphone connection via USB:
Note that you can deactivate connection sharing at any time for each of the options.
Tethering from an iPhone
These three options are also available when sharing mobile data from your iPhone.
Wi-Fi connection sharing
To enable Personal Hotspot on your iPhone:
From this section, you can check the phone name and Wi-Fi password. You can choose to change the latter.
Tethering via Bluetooth
First, you will need to pair the two devices. To do this, on the iPhone that provides Personal Hotspot, go to Settings, then Personal Hotspot, and check that Allow Other Users is enabled. Still in Settings, click Bluetooth and turn it on, if you haven't already. Stay on this screen while connecting the devices.
Once Bluetooth is enabled:
Tethering via USB
iPhone USB connection sharing requires installing the iTunes software, in its latest version, on the PC or Mac that will access your connection sharing. Then connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable. If the "Trust This Computer" alert pops up on your iPhone, just click Trust. On the computer, go to System Preferences, then Network, and select iPhone USB. If it doesn't appear, click the "+" symbol at the bottom of the screen to add it.
Namely: Apple has a feature called Family Sharing which allows you to automatically authorize the devices of your relatives within your access point generated from your iPhone. To access this option, go to Settings > Cellular Data > Connection Sharing, at the very bottom of the page. Once configured, this option allows your loved ones not to have to systematically enter a password to connect.
