Your child received an iPhone or iPad for Christmas, but he's not going to do anything with it. Fortunately, Apple has thought of everything by integrating parental controls to adjust its settings and avoid any worries.

That's it, you've just given your offspring their first smartphone or tablet and have decided that it will be an iPhone or an iPad. But how to make your toddler use it without fear? Here are the solutions at your disposal to best protect your child's device.

Create an account dedicated to your child

Be aware that Apple does not allow a child to have their own identifier without parental consent if they are under the age of 13, regardless of the country. In France, this regulation differs a little since your offspring must be 15 years or older to have their personal Apple ID. Before this legal age, you can create an account for him as long as you have activated Family Sharing in your own settings.

Simply follow the steps displayed on the screen, enter an email address (ideally that of your child since it will eventually be linked to their account), as well as their date of birth. By activating Family Sharing, you can also choose what you want to share with your child, for example photos or subscriptions such as Apple Music.

Managing access to different content

Once your child has their own account, you can manage the actions available to them on their newly obtained smartphone or tablet. It could not be easier. Just go to Settings again and click on the Screen Time setting. This is where you can select the “This iPhone belongs to my child” option before entering a security code. The latter will prevent your offspring from crushing the restrictions that you have imposed on them.

In the Screen Time setting, you have access to several settings:

And if in the future you choose to let go of parental controls, but you still don't want your child to be able to buy anything from the App Store and iTunes, know that with the Family Sharing, you can request that a notification be sent to you each time you attempt to download. A way to not only control downloaded content, but also to prevent spending on in-app purchases offered in certain games.

Often cracks jokes when he's uncomfortable. Could have been Spider-Man if he didn't spend too much time behind a screen.
