Motorola has just announced the Motorola Edge and Edge+, two smartphones that come to tackle the high-end segment, abandoned by the brand for many years. Successful return?

There was a time when Motorola was a fixture in the phone market, alongside Nokia. The turning point of smartphones has not, however, been approached with the greatest success and the brand has tried several times to stand out without ever regaining its former glory. Several takeovers later – Motorola now belongs to Lenovo – the manufacturer is again trying to carve out a place on the high end with the Motorola Edge and Edge+.

On paper: high-end

On paper, the Motorola Edge+ does not have much to envy to the best smartphones on the market. On board is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.0 storage, but also the latest connectivity standards, such as WiFi 6 and 5G (NSA and SA). Everything of course runs on Android 10 and sports a design with very thin borders thanks in particular to the curved screen on the sides and the front camera contained in a discreet bubble in the upper left corner.

Among the most important points on a modern phone, the screen is not left out. The Motorola Edge + displays a large diagonal of 6.7 inches in Full HD + on an OLED panel with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a fingerprint sensor hidden below.

It is on the battery that Motorola particularly wants to stand out. As we know, this is an important criterion for the brand, but also for a large number of users, which is why we find on board the Edge + a huge 5000 mAh accumulator promising two full days of use. Fast charging, on the other hand, only goes up to 18 W wired and 15 W wireless, but the reverse charging system initiated by Huawei on the Mate 20 Pro is also part of it.

In photos, the Edge+ doesn't lag behind either with a triple sensor with a 108MP wide-angle, 16MP ultra-wide-angle and 8MP telephoto, two of them — the main and zoom — being optically and electronically stabilized, in both stills and video. It can also film up to 6K.

All around the edges

The Motorola Edge for its part is a little less advanced. It features a Snapdragon 765 SoC, a 4500 mAh battery and a 64 Mpx main sensor "only". However, it benefits from the same 6.7-inch diagonal with its curved edges.

And for good reason, the borders are not only aesthetic. Motorola has added software functions from finger swipes on the edges of the screen. You can easily access your notifications, your application drawer, or shortcuts.

These borders also light up to signal the arrival of a call or notification even when the smartphone is turned over, as well as the battery level when it is charging.

A price that exceeds the edges of 1000 euros

All these technologies have a price. The Motorola Edge + will be available from May in Europe at a price of 1199 euros, which will position it directly against Samsung, Huawei and Apple among the most expensive, hoping that the quality, especially in photos, will be appropriate. .

The Motorola Edge is better value for money with a price of 599 euros, also in May.
