The Huawei P30 Pro, six months later
When we think of Huawei at the end of 2019, we automatically think of the setbacks of the Chinese company against the US government.Huawei is today synonymous with the absence of Google and its services, for fear over the years to come and a barely released Mate 30 pro which crystallizes all these thoughts.
However, the start of 2019 was smiling at Huawei. After a perfectly executed Mate 20 pro (which has become my favorite smartphone of all time), the manufacturer was released the P30 Pro, its new flagship of the photo, which perfectly convinced me in testing. And after having broken my dull 20 pro, I took it in a long time. Here is my return after six months spent with the smartphone.
The obvious concern
I'm pretty sure that your first question will be: "So follow-up, what does it give?»».Well ... great.I cannot lie on this point, Huawei did not disappoint on the follow -up of this smartphone.
The point that has always been frustrating for me on Huawei smartphones is that the smartphones interface was extremely aging.Released under Emui 9, the P30 Pro always made me think of a 2016 smartphone.
There are things that an alternative launcher does not hide, like this horrible notification part that I could no longer see in painting. But a few months ago, I was able to take advantage of Emui 10 under Android 10 in beta, then receive a stable version a few weeks later, and the changes that Huawei made all were extremely positive.
The best change of Emui 10
The interface is beautiful, more fluid, and overall more stable.I received 2/3 additional stability patches in the meantime - the last one only a few days ago - to reassure me even more about the follow -up of the company despite the situation.Emui 10 in itself is very good, even if the manufacturer always tends to push a lot of notifications. We get used to it, quickly, and we easily deactivate them.Over time, this is no longer a problem.
My Huawei P30 Pro just doesn't know the crisis and continues to be exactly what I expect from him on this point.
Tall and heavy
Before taking the P30 Pro, I used the Mate 20 Pro at length.Very long. This smartphone quickly became my favorite of all time for a simple fact: the features he managed to have and the autonomy he showed despite his relatively small format.
Besides that, the P30 Pro is ... a monster.Larger, wider, heavier too, it is definitely not as perfect for my hand as was the Mate 20 Pro.Which does not mean that it is uncomfortable, its rounded forms on the sides and flat on the top and the bottom make it still pleasant to take in hand.
Reaching the top is a mission
When I test another smartphone, and in particular the Pixel 4 XL, I notice the difference in quality of finish between the two.But when I take the P30 Pro then, I can't help but complain about its weight and the fact that it is difficult to use in one hand.
The format is simply not exactly made for me, as the Mate 20 Pro was.It is an excellent smartphone, but I end up boring large screens and heavy goods vehicles and has a very personal desire to return to a more practical smartphone.
What sublime screen
All this is ironic knowing that it is also with the Huawei P30 Pro that I started watching more and more mobility videos, a reflex that I did not have so far.Until recently, I preferred to wait to be in front of my television or a computer before consulting the slightest video on the net, and never really understood why so many videos were consulted on smartphone in the world.
But my journeys have multiplied over the year, especially on my weekends, and I often wanted to watch a live fighting competition on a Saturday or Sunday ... while being on the train. This gradually pushed me to watch videos on my smartphone, and fully enjoy my 50 GB of data per month.
Video and cat in the greatest comfort
And on this point, the Huawei P30 Pro is far from having been a disappointment.Between its brightness and its respect for colors (which I settled on the DCI-P3 profile), without counting of course the simple diagonal of the slab, my smartphone has always been excellent to offer me a comfortable viewing experience.
On the other hand, I cannot say so much of the speakers.Iron at a mono speaker located at the bottom of the phone after having known the stereo of Mate 20 Pro is always a source of frustration for me.Likewise for the absence of 3D facial recognition, very practical in low light on the Mate 20 Pro and which here is based only on the photo sensor and the fact of automatically pushing the brightness of the screen at night background. This is not a solution, but a misery cache.
Always beautiful photos
But the high point of the Huawei P30 Pro at its announcement, as is always the case for this range, has always been the photo part. The inclusion of a red/yellow/blue filter sensor rather than red/green/blue had surprised then, but the photo quality in our tests was the same as on the Mate 20 Pro.
In use over such a long period, I am far from disappointed.Despite the many different conditions in which I put it, the Huawei P30 Pro has always been able to offer me excellent shots with very natural and harmonious shades. It is especially on his zoom that I have never been able to take it for lack, allowing me not only to do my job more effectively, but also to capture things that I could not have captured before (like this pretty littlesquirrel at Central Park).
There remains a point on which I was a little disappointed.I cannot say if the quality has somewhat dropped over the updates, or if it comes from the fact that I have tested many other smartphones in the meantime and in particular the Pixel 4 XL, but the quality of the interior capturessatisfies me more as much as before. In particular, it is the photos indoors when the brightness is good that do not satisfy me entirely, for lack of a noise all the same very (too) pronounced despite the capture conditions not so bad as that.
Beyond that, the versatility of the device is always the line that I appreciate the most in these configurations with multiple sensors. To be able to get closer to a subject, then go away, make an ultra-angle, zoom, and all this without the slightest effort and with a quality all the same consistent between the sensors is always for me the best asset ofThese smartphones. The Huawei P30 Pro continues to be an excellent tool for having fun with photography and finding beautiful shots easily.
All day, no matter what I do
If there is one aspect on which the Huawei P30 Pro has never disappointed me over these six months, it is its autonomy.Despite my often intensive use, I am not really able to empty it and finish my days very often around 60 % without even paying attention. And this on days when I use it relatively intensively all the same, the densest days ending around 40 %.
I play little, but I regularly consult my phone and this one is constantly vibrating.Whether it is a press releases or messages from friends, it is rare that he does not come alive every ten minutes. And above all, I like to take photos, which is a heavy activity for a smartphone whatever the brand.
When we get used to it, we don't do without it
Even more, if I find myself in a situation where the basic autonomy is not enough for me (followed by an event for example), I just have to find a socket for a few minutes: quick recharge at 40W does wonders forQuickly give it back juice without being a weight.
And of course, there is wireless recharge which I have become very fan.Recharge benches are now placed on my desk and on the edge of my bed/sofa (small Parisian apartment obliges) to allow me to recharge easily and simply by working or before going to bed. With a bonus that I had not planned: being able to charge my smartphone discreetly and silent in the room despite the fact that someone fell asleep. It's very silly, and that's why it's absolutely great.
Still standing
So here I am after six months of relationship with this Huawei P30 Pro.And despite a small period of fear following the first announcement of Huawei's banishment by the American government, all this had no impact on my experience: the smartphone remained excellent.
However, I must also admit that after six months (and this is linked to my profession of course), I want to change smartphone. Why ?Because I realize that he does not really correspond to me, not as much as the Mate 20 pro before him.
Its most comfortable place: on the arm of my sofa
And all this is only due to its format, a bit too big for me to use it daily without any effort. My priorities also change, making that I would have nothing against a smaller format just as efficient.
But in itself, the Huawei P30 Pro is far from having disappointed me.Always efficient and versatile in photo, always offering me a monster autonomy and having been refined graphically with the release of Emui 10, he only made improve by my side.
