Can Xiaomi compete with Samsung, Apple and Google in terms of photo on smartphone? This is in any case what the manufacturer seems to want to climb to first place.Renowned for its smartphones with good value for money, Xiaomi has recently tried its luck on the ultra premium market. And in this quest, he may have found a new size ally: Leica.
From Huawei to Xiaomi
Rumor would already run at the start of the year: Leica could abandon its partnership with Huawei, rather badly in recent years, to turn to another Chinese brand. In May, three names were then mentioned: Xiaomi, Sharp and Gionee. This corridor noise is now back with a more final name, that of Xiaomi.
It is the Leaker Digital Chat Station which affirms it on Weibo - without proof or source announced nevertheless - with a simple photo of the Xiaomi Mi 11 ultra displaying the logo of the famous manufacturer of cameras, accompanied by the mention "Coming Soon"(shortly). We can not only deduce that Leica could have associated himself with Xiaomi, but also that the first smartphone from this partnership would be the successor to the Mi 11 Ultra, namely the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, expected for the beginning of 2022.
A photo revolution?
This is not the first time that a photo specialist has been associated with a smartphone manufacturer. We can obviously quote Leica and Huawei, but also Zeiss and Nokia or Hasselblad and OnePlus. But what does it really bring?
In general, these image specialists will get involved at different levels when designing the camera.Often, they share their know-how with regard to the processing of optics, but also at the level of the colorimetry or demotoring processing algorithms. This last point is one of the weaknesses of Xiaomi on its smartphones, resulting in a purple halo around certain details of the image.
Nothing says, however, that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra could enjoy a notable quality gain if this partnership is really born. This kind of partnership takes time to settle and really bear fruit. For the OnePlus 9 Pro for example, the presence of Hasselblad did not allow it to be propelled among the best on the market. It will certainly be necessary to wait for several generations before catching up a notable delay.
Recall that by waiting for the Xiaomi 12 Ultra which should be announced in the first quarter of 2022, the Chinese manufacturer could launch its Xiaomi 12 at the end of this year.
