Xiaomi had a pretty good year in 2021, launching its first non-China-exclusive premium flagship, delivering stellar budget phones in the Redmi Note 10 series, and launching its first foldable phone. It all came together to give the made a move she almost certainly hadn't seen before.

Xiaomi even battled with Apple and Samsung in the first half, briefly sitting atop the throne, according to several tracking companies. That is, until chip shortages affected production in the second half.

Even without the setback caused by a shortage of chips, there's still room for improvement. Here's what we want to see from Xiaomi in 2022.

1. A broader update commitment

So we want Xiaomi to aggressively expand this initiative to more devices next year, including the Xiaomi 12 series, Redmi Note range and beyond. After all, if Samsung can do it, so can Xiaomi.

2. Foldables in global markets

Speaking of Samsung, it's one of the few companies currently offering foldable phones in the world. That's not to say we haven't seen foldables from other brands in 2021 like Huawei and Oppo, but these have generally been limited to China.

Xiaomi is one such culprit, as the Mi Mix Fold launched in its home market in March but never made it to anywhere else. We're guessing the company has another foldable up its sleeve next year, but it needs to bring this device to global users if it has any hope of challenging Samsung in this space.

3. Consistent and bug-free MIUI

Xiaomi's MIUI skin is always a somewhat polarizing affair in terms of aesthetics, but one thing we increasingly discovered in 2021 was that the experience could vary wildly by phone. The company even went so far as to release MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition update which promised to fix over 200 system app issues and 160 system issues.

It's clear that Xiaomi needs to bring more polish and quality assurance to its software in 2022. It seems the company knows that too, because in mid-2021 it formed a working group dedicated to gathering feedback on MIUI problems and how to solve them.

4. Enter the US market

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

Xiaomi has long intended to import its phones into the US, with the company eyeing an entry in 2018 and as late as last year. That clearly hasn't happened, even though its TV boxes and a handful of smart home products have achieved some market success.

There are two big hurdles for Xiaomi, namely gaining carrier support and dealing with the security/geopolitical issues that have destroyed Huawei's global phone business. a US entry would likely attract further scrutiny from government officials.

Nevertheless, OnePlus and TCL have shown that Chinese phone brands can gain popularity and market acceptance. And LG's exit from the smartphone industry means there could still be an opportunity to carve out a share. cake.

5. Better availability

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

The global chip shortage affected everyone in 2021, and Xiaomi was certainly no different. We don't know if the Mi 11 Ultra fell victim to the shortage or if Xiaomi simply underestimated demand, but it seemed incredibly hard to find in India and Europe.

The company even halted production of the Redmi Note 10 in Indonesia, likely due to the shortage. It's a pretty grim move when the Redmi Note series is Xiaomi's bread and butter in terms of volume (even though it had still have the Redmi Note 10S on hand). So we definitely want the company to know how to better meet demand next year, because it must be frustrating for consumers looking specifically to buy these phones.
