With the IOS 15 update, Apple opens a new program called Digital legacy. This feature allows iPhone users to select a handful of contacts that will be allowed to access their personal data after they die. The chosen loved ones will get access to your iCloud photos and videos, and more broadly, all information related to your Apple account.
In keeping with its usual calendar, Apple unveiled the latest updates from IOS 15, iPadOS 15 and Monterey MacOS at the opening conference of WWDC 2021. The Cupertino giant has announced an improved do not disturb mode called focus, a revised Safari, an offline Siri, a new weather application and a SharePlay option.
During another WWDC online conference, Apple announced the introduction of the Digital legacy program. This service, which is still under development, will allow Apple device users to design trusted contacts that will be able to access their data after they die. Via the settings, you can add several people you trust.
How does IOS 15's Digital legacy program work?
Until now, it has been very complicated, and often impossible, to access data stored on an iPhone, Mac or iPad after the death of its owner. Despite the presentation of a death certificate, Apple firmly refuses to unlock a device.
This program therefore aims to make life easier for loved ones after a death. Contacts designated by the deceased during his or her lifetime will have access to much of your personal data, such as photos, videos or files. The contact can even restore the data from an iCloud backup to another device. To obtain access, "heirs" contacts will have to submit an application. This request will be examined in detail by Apple.
Some data will, however, remain inaccessible. Not surprisingly, passwords and identifiers stored in the iCloud ring and credit card numbers recorded by the deceased's Apple devices will not be disclosed.

In the same vein, Apple will be able to design recovery contacts in case your iCloud password is forgotten. This feature will be deployed with the IOS 15 update later this fall.
